La Caravella Positano Review – What You Need to Know
If you’re looking for something a bit different in Positano and want to stay right on the beach, you may want to consider the La Caravella apartments.
They are more affordable than the beach-front hotels – and can give you a bit more flexibility in terms of space and food since they include separate lounge areas and kitchens/kitchenettes.
La Caravella itself consists of 3 air-conditioned guestrooms with balconies and patios looking right out onto a private beach (the main free beach is right beside it as well). There are sun loungers on most patios and it’s a ideal place for people watching or just relaxing with a good book.
Apartments are quite large (especially by European standards) and include fireplaces, separate lounge/tv/eating areas and kitchens or kitchenettes with full-sized refrigerators and coffee makers. Apartments sleep from 2 – 6 people.
La Caravella is within easy walking distance to the ferries, the beach, restaurants and the shopping area. In order to get the buses to Amalfi or Sorrento, you’ll have to walk up through the Pedestrian area to the main street. (However you can also take the ferries in peak season which are just steps away from these apartments)
Wireless internet is available in the apartments for a fee. Unlike most Positano hotels, breakfast is not included here.
Because the apartments are right on the beach, there is no parking on-site. You have to park at one of the public parking garages higher up and walk down through the pedestrian area and then to the beach with your bags. You can however get a porter to take your bags down for your for a few Euros, which is well worth it.
Airport and Train station pickup can be arranged by the owner of the apartments (surcharge applies).
Pet-friendly rooms can be requested by contacting the property at the number on the booking confirmation (there is an extra charge for pets).
One thing to know about this place is that it does not work like a standard hotel. You are essentially renting an apartment.
There is no check-in/reception area. You have to call ahead to the owner when you’re almost there and she will meet you to help you check in and arrange your stay.
Tip: Try to arrive during the day. With the lack of reception – and only the owner checking you in – it can be a bit of a wait if you arrive late at night. Also, note that the owner does not speak much English – so you may have to be a bit patient when trying to check in.
If you’re looking for an affordable place right on the beach – you may want to consider La Caravella. It’s a mid-range accommodation in an unbeatable location. It’s great for families with kids or people who can’t/don’t want to walk a lot of stairs.
You don’t get the luxuries of a “hotel” – and be aware that, as an apartment, there is no full-time staff so things may take a bit longer to get done. However if you don’t mind this then you’ll probably be very happy at La Caravella!
